Details: SUMMARY: Plant influent pump shutting down DETAILS: Garden Valley WA is small system operated by Cindy and Pat with Ray Doan as DRC. Most recent request for assistance was to investigate plant shut-down due to overheating of influent raw water pump. Pump shut down on heat typically due to cavitations (air in line), caused by plugged intake screen. Plant was unattended when pump shut down, so no information re: circumstances prior to shut down. Drove the line to reservoir. I was told somewhere there is a buried air vent, but they dont know where and it has to be opened up physically to function. First recommendation was to pick a high spot, dig up line and install above-ground air vent. Reservoir surrounded with cattails and sedges. Dam is shallow with floating intake that appears free of obstructions. Actual intake submerged at all times on 90 degree PVC pipe approx. 6 inches under surface. Returned to plant to investigate raw water line. Where it enters plant, line rises approx 8 ft. and makes loop before entering building at level of the pump (2 ft.). Im told this is cranberry grower technology used to break water column to prevent water from running through the pump on shut down. Break in water column is likely a second source of air. Replacing loop with direct plumbing and solenoid-activated check valve would be better solution to siphoning problem. Followed up with Cindy on conversations with chemical supplier and our odds of receiving compensation for product previously shipped of questionable quality. Reviewed educational materials recently received in preparation for certification testing. Spent additional visit preparing Cindy and Pat for upcoming sanitary survey by reviewing the deficiencies and regulation violations list used by the drinking water program. ACTION NEEDED: Work with Cindy when requested.
