Details: SUMMARY: Inspected water system and made recommendations for improvements. DETAILS: I made a site visit to inspect the water system, gather more information and discuss follow-up to the July 31, 2007 E.coli positive sample with the operator. The pressure tank is located in a pumphouse near the main driveway leading up to three homes on the system. The E.coli positive sample was apparently collected at the hose bib in the pumphouse. The system pressure was 60 psi during the inspection. The operator states the system serves five residences. Accordingly to our files, there is a "y" in the main distribution line uphill from the pressure tank. One branch serves three homes and the other serves two homes. There may be a deadend line as well. The operator will verify. The source is located a considerable distance below in a wooded swale. The "springbox" is a concrete culvert placed in the ground with a pumb located in the culvert. There is no seal at the top of the culvert, leaving the source water exposed to contamination. The "spring" source water was visible approximately 6-10 inches below the ground surface. The chlorinator is located in a small building next to the source. The chlorinator feed tubing to the discharge line was broken, and was reconnected during the inspection. There were no records to indicate when free chlorine residuals had been measured and the operator was not aware of the target free chlorine residual. ACTION NEEDED: The operator will pick up instructions today regarding disinfection of the source and distribution. We discussed leaving the boil water advisory in place until five routines are "absent". We also discussed ways to protect the source water, including sealing the "spring box" and diverting storm water runoff.
