Details: SUMMARY: Individual complaint DETAILS: I spoke with Jackie Fern with DEQ, who received a complaint from a homeowner that the water appears to be killing her plants and that shes had skin reactions. Jackie also spoke with the water system operator. I spoke with Leahs husband, who explained that the pine needles where she had sprayed water had turned brown. He also said shes been a little itchy after taking showers, but they installed a filter, which is helping. I spoke with Scott Meyer, the operator, who said he went to their home right away after receiving the complaint and took chlorine residuals outside and inside. The residuals were 0.88 and 0.92 mg/L, but he couldnt remember which was which. Scott said the husband told him the water killed a fushia plant, but that was a couple years ago. Scott saw the dead section on the scrub pines, but he also noted that the larger trees behind the house had the same brown sections, and they were not being sprayed with the water. Scott said there have been no other complaints about dying plants. One person filed a complaint about seemingly high chlorine a couple weeks earlier, but the complaintant said it went away. I asked Scott about the systems pH levels, and he said theyve been keeping it ~7.4-7.5, but it does spike sometimes depending on the raw water. I suggested that he could take a pH reading at the home if the problem continues or another complaint is filed, just to rule that out. The complaint is on file at the water systems office. I left a message at the complainants phone number explaining that the chlorine levels appear to be ok and suggesting they contact the OSU Extension office for information on how water quality can affect plants. ACTION NEEDED: If there are more complaints, operator should check chlorine again and pH.
