Details: SUMMARY: Well disinfection Assistance DETAILS: The system owns and operates a well that serve a population of approximately 45 people and has 24 connections. The system does not have any treatment or disinfection. Over the past several months the system had several positive coliform samples, including all 4 repeat samples coming back positive on one occasion. The well also tested positive for Coliform. The system attempted to disinfect the system following the DWP procedures but samples still came back positive. After speaking with the system, county and state it was decided to chlorinate the distribution system with a dose to obtain a residual of 4.0 ppm free chlorine and shock the well with a dose of 50 ppm chlorine. The system notified all customers of the procedure in advance and tank levels were drawn down to allow for prolonged pumping. To disinfect the distribution system 100 gallons of diluted hypochlorite was prepared and metered into the wellhead to achieve approximately 4.0 ppm free chlorine doses, measured using a Hach Pocket Colorimeter. The dose was followed through the system checking hose bibs at the bottom of the system and working up. The chlorinated water was traced to both ends of the distribution system as well as being measured at the tanks. Approximately 9500 Gallons of chlorinated water was pumped into the distribution system before the effort was terminated. This should satisfy system demands for several days and provide ample contact time. The pump was shut down, isolated from the distribution system and shock chlorinated per state well disinfection procedures. With the tanks partially full it was decided to leave the well off for at least one full day before attempting to flush the chlorinated water out. I left a supply of DPD packets. ACTION NEEDED: I advised them a chlorination system might be advisable if problem continues.
