Details: SUMMARY: Visit regarding positive coliform DETAILS: An illness complaint from a group of people who got sick while camping at the Fairgrounds. The Or Epidemiological (OR EPI) group received a call stating that some people who attended church retreat during the week of July 13th - 18th got ill. During that same week the water system had a coliform detection during routine testing. Subsequent repeat samples were all negative for coliforms. OR EPI investigated and made a visit on 7/22/09. During the visit the epidemiologists swabbed hard surfaces and took 2 water samples in distribution. One of the two samples taken was positive. The state Drinking Water then made a site visit on August 5 and Angela Combe from NCPHD accompanied them. During that visit 5 more samples were collected and two were positive for coliform and one positive for E.coli. Of those 5 samples the only ones that were positive were taken from the source with the chlorinator turned off. The samples taken in distribution all had chlorine residuals and were all negative. Of the samples taken at the well head one was in Portland and one in Pendleton, one was coliform positive and one was both coliform positive and E.coli positive. We were notified and John Zalaznik pulled 3 samples on August 6 , all were positive. A boil water was issued and campers were directly notified and staff helped in the posting of the system on 8/7/09 ACTION NEEDED: Contacted Michelle Byrd at the state for advice on testing follow up. Keep boil water notice on until Fairgoers are gone and then the water system can clean the reservoir and shock chlorinate the well before completing all necessary testing.
