Details: SUMMARY: Troubleshooting Contamination Investigation DETAILS: The system ones and operates a ground water system. The utility supplies water to 250 people through 145 connections. HBH was contacted by Russ Kazmierczak to provide emergency assistance to the system regarding numerous water quality complaints. The complaints were in relation to “White Matter” in the drinking water. Previous work by DWP/HBH indicates that the matter was organic. In March 2009 HBH contacted Gene Cox, the new operator to offer assistance with troubleshooting the problem. Traveled to system and met operator, toured the system and attempted to determine conditions that would cause the “White Matter”. Operator was insistent that the matter was Iron Bacteria. Researched indicates that Iron Bacteria can present a white color in some conditions, however, reviews of the well water chemistry reveals that iron concentrations are very low, ruling out iron problems. Additional contact was made with the system to attempt to troubleshoot the problem. Inventoried existing equipment and overall operation of the system. Recommendations were made for the utility to develop a water system master plan to better identify the system deficiency. The “White Matter” only shows up during the summer time and periods of heavy pumping for irrigation. Recommendations were made to separate the irrigation system from the main distribution system since the system has access to another source of water. Also servicing the well pump is recommended, the pump has been in service for 60 years and is likely not pumping the volume of water that the pump is rated for. ACTION NEEDED: The system needs to locate source of the white matter, whether it is before/after the well pump.
