Details: SUMMARY: Water System Troubleshooting/Contaminant Investigation DETAILS: The system owns and operates aground water system. The utility supplies water to 250 full time residents through 145 connections. HBH was contacted by Russell Kazmierczak to provide emergency assistance to the water system regarding numerous water quality complaints. The complaints were in relation to “White Matter” in the drinking water. Previous work by DWP indicates that the matter was organic. In March on 2009, HBH contacted Gene Cox, the new operator, to offer assistance with troubleshooting the problem. I traveled to system, met with operator and toured the system and attempted to determine conditions that would cause the “white matter”. Operator was insistent that the matter was Iron Bacteria. Research indicates that Iron Bacteria can present as a white color in some conditions, however, reviews of the well water chemistry reveals that iron concentrations are very low, ruling out iron bacteria. Additional contact was made with the system to attempt to troubleshoot the problem. ACTION NEEDED: I corresponded with Russ Kazmierczak (DWP0 and the system regarding possible sources for the “White Matter”.
