Details: SUMMARY: UV form and DBPs DETAILS: Jim called to ask: 1) whether he could take the 3rd quarter DBP sample now instead of in September (yes), and 2) whether DWS had concluded anything about the light intensity comparisons for their monthly UV treatment report. Our DWS engineers Jay M and Pete F have concluded that, because Belloni Boys Ranch did not purchase an optional piece of equipment (interface) that would allow them to measure/ display the light intensity, the PWS cannot record such comparisons on the form. That interface was not a requirement of our program. So, their Viqua Pro 50 will show a green light as long as the dose delivered is the required minimum of 40 mJ/cm2 (they cannot test the light intensity separately from the dose delivered.) Therefore, on the monthly surface water treatment form, the only UV treatment question they need to answer is the “Monthly Cumulative % Off-Spec Water Produced.” This amount should be zero unless the display stops showing green at the same time that water is flowing to the distribution. Of course, the PWS will still need to maintain 0.2 mg/L chlorine residual at the entry point. Jim stated he tries to keep it between 0.2 and 0.5 mg/L. He is monitoring the chlorine level closely now because in late summer or fall, more organics show up in the source water, which changes the chlorine demand. ACTION NEEDED: I wrote a memo to the file about the decision of the engineers, and relayed that decision to Jim today. Revised the monthly treatment report accordingly - with only one UV question to answer each month, that question may be placed at the bottom of the first page and there is no need for a second page of the form any more for this PWS. Will send Jim the revised form.
