| Details: | City of Salem monitors the reservoir, river, and their intakes during algal bloom season. Results of concern for three samples were received Saturday and Sunday of last week. Drinking Water Services (DWS) discussed the situation with Salem over the weekend and planned operational changes. Salem shut off the intake on Saturday, but after a main break resumed the intake on Sunday. They also isolated and turned off one of the filters because it is possible there was cyanobacteria growth in it. Additional samples were collected on Sunday, Monday and were sent to lab on Tuesday due to holiday. Samples were also collected on Tuesday. These results expected on Thursday. DWS held a conference call on Tuesday, 5/29 with Salem, EPA and OHA Communications staff to discuss whether to advise issuing a public notification or wait for Thursday’s results. EPA advised that either course was consistent with their 10-day health advisory (HA) guidance. It was agreed the City should issue a notice advising vulnerable populations not to drink the water. Children under six, people with compromised immune systems, people receiving dialysis treatment, people with pre-existing liver conditions, pets, pregnant women or nursing mothers, or other sensitive populations should follow this advisory. As a precautionary measure, the elderly and other sensitive populations should consider following these advisory instructions. Advisory may be lifted after 2 consecutive finished water results below HA levels. Update 05/31/2018: Based on test results received today 5/31/18 the City of Salem will be maintaining the vulnerable population water advisory until further notice. Tap water is safe for consumption for healthy children over the age of six and healthy adults. Lifted 06/02/2018: OHA advised city of Salem and Marion County to lift the advisory based on water test results from 5/31/18 showing all finished and distribution water results are below health advisory values for the second consecutive day. Marion county is developing messaging around lifting the advisory and water flushing recommendations. |
