Details: Results from water quality samples received Wednesday morning (June 6, 2018) indicate that cyanotoxins are present in the City of Salem water distribution system at levels that exceed Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for children and vulnerable populations. As a result, a drinking water advisory is in place that applies to the following populations only: children under the age of six, people with compromised immune systems or pre-existing liver conditions, people receiving dialysis treatment or other sensitive populations, the elderly, pregnant women or nursing mothers, pets. The City is currently working on drinking water distribution sites for vulnerable populations. The City will continue to post sample results and information related to the advisory on the City of Salem website.

Update 06/10/2018:  Test results received Sunday 6/10 from samples collected Friday 6/8 indicate the level of cyanotoxins in the distribution system are below EPA advisory levels for vulnerable populations. Because of an active algal bloom in the water source Salem has decided to keep the drinking water advisory in place for at least two more weeks while they continue to test and refine new treatment methods.

Lifted 07/03/2018:  The City of Salem lifted the advisory around 4 pm today, as algae toxin levels in finished water have been below health advisory levels for 12 consecutive days. Toxin results from the City of Turners system have also been below advisory levels.
