Details: | A fire at a commercial building occurred early this morning at Municipal Pipeline Supply Co., 2303 10th Street in Baker City, OR. An unknown quantity (but no more than 15 gallons) of Phos-Chek WD881 Class A fire suppressant foam concentrate was accidentally backfed into the water distribution system. The City has isolated a 3-4 block section of distribution piping along 10th Street and is flushing the water mains. The water being flushed is now running clear. Water service has been shut off to customers in the area, including some commercial customers, including Bob’s Burgers, Inland Café, Eagle Cap Grill, Paisano’s Pizza, and a Gas Snack convenience store. Reverse 911 calls were made to those in the affected area, advising them that they may not have water service, or if they do have service and they notice any foaming in the water not to use it. The city is trying to determine if any of the product moved outside the area that is isolated by requesting customers report any foaming or odor in the water. Customers are advised to not drink the water and to thoroughly flush the plumbing in their homes. Lifted 10/28/2020: An OHA toxicologist review of the products SDS showed the main ingredient is listed as non-hazardous, and that it is a common ingredient in cosmetic products. The health risk was determined to be low enough to allow customers to resume using the water normally unless suds or foaming are noticed, or if there are unusual tastes or odors. The city issued a new advisory relaying this message. |
