Details: Background/Problem Identification:
OHA reached out on behalf of Swisshome Village for assistance in troubleshooting their water system for DBP reduction.

Assistance Provided:
The circuit rider worked with Chris Landau from Swisshome Villlage over the phone and via email to assist in assessment of their DBP issues. The following recommendations are made in an effort to reduce the DBP levels at Swisshome Village:

• Limit the amount of organics (particulate and dissolved) entering the system prior to the disinfection segment. This may be accomplished at Swisshome Village by the following methods:
o Ensure that there is no “build-up” of leaves or other organic materials at the raw water intake (and dam area) or in any other location open to such intrusion, a low-maintenance “Conada screen-style” box intake may be employed to mitigate leaf/organic build-up at the existing intake:
o Keep all pipelines and storage tanks flushed/clean of sediment build-up
o Use the recently constructed slow sand filter
o Use an appropriately sized Granular Activated Carbon reactor

•Limit the amount of sodium hypochlorite used for the disinfection segment to achieve CT. We have the following recommendations for Swisshome Village:
oCalculate CT daily and dose an appropriate amount of sodium hypochlorite to meet CT without grossly overshooting the required amount necessary to achieve CT
oVerify that the sodium hypochlorite mixture is dosed proportionally to the flowrate of the pipe that it is injected into
oUV disinfection may be employed to reduce the required amount of hypochlorite significantly, look to the approved unit that provides 4.0-log virus removal credit at the following link:

Follow-Up Actions Needed:
The circuit rider is available to assist further as needed.
