Details: | Background/Problem Identification: Clare McClellan from DEQ, requested that the circuit rider assist with finding out what would need to take place at Scofield in order to bring one of their inactive wells back online. Assistance Provided: Civil West worked with Clare McClellan from DEQ, Jesus Santaurio from Scofield, and Chantal Wikstrom from OHA to find out the best path forward for bring the well in question back online. The search for the path back to an active well ended with information from OHA Geologist Tom Pattee. Tom indicated that the well was “inadequately constructed since the casing seal, as reported on the well log, does not appear to have enough cement to adequately seal the well off from the formation. The well log (MARI6896) indicates the well was sealed to a depth of 30 ft with 3 sacks of cement. Calculations of the volume of the annular space between the casing and borehole wall (8-inch casing in a 12-inch hole) indicate that a minimum of 8 sacks of cement would be needed to seal the well. The well driller recorded that 3 sacks were used which suggests that either the bore hole partially caved in, the cement bridged, and/or the driller mixed the cement with drill cuttings or some other unknown material. Three sacks simply aren’t enough to have a continuous seal from the surface to a depth of 30 ft. So, it’s unlikely that the well would be approved for public water supply use unless it’s reconstructed.” Follow-Up Actions Needed: None at this time. Technical Reports to be Prepared and Expected Timeframe: N/A. |
