| Details: | A site visit was conducted to review the Slow Sand Filter (SSF) to create a cost estimate for possible replacement/expansion and assistance with funding. Upon onsite review of the SSF, it was noted that backwashing of the system was not taking place. When reviewing the influent and effluent of the SSF, it appears that the system is capable of backwashing. One shortfall that is the possibility of using the stored treated water inline to conduct the backwash. The system will function to its full potential once backwashing is incorporated into normal operations. Manholes with valves need to be cleaned out. Gate valves in manholes need to be identified. Pressurized treated water needs to be available and connected to the effluent line of the SSF prior to the pre-chlorination basin. Operators need to be trained on backwashing procedure. Possible onsite assistance with first backwash once manholes are cleaned out and valves identified. Memo to operators stating information needed to conduct an effective backwash of their SSF. |
