Details: | Caller reported that the water has gotten almost black 3 times in the last 14 months, including one time in summer when there was no rain. The change from clear to black can come on quickly. Their water source is an unnamed creek. There is no water bill. Treatment is applied only at each home. Caller has a 10-micron filter and UV light, but when the water runs black, the filter cannot keep up and the UV light cannot penetrate for sufficient disinfection. Verified that the water system contact is still Steve Winfrey, and the population and connection numbers are ly below the community water level (a non-EPA system). System has a reservoir uphill and serves 8 or 9 homes and a church. I suggested the caller first talk to Steve Winfrey to strive for a solution. OAWU may be able to help with trouble-shooting. I provided contact info for OAWU as well as Rick Hallmark at Coos County Environmental Public Health and the local water lab. Suggested that the caller document the black water events using photos and jar samples to help diagnose the issue. A colleague later suggested the black may be manganese. |
