Details: Background/Problem Identification:

Mike Johnson at JCWA reached out to the circuit rider for assistance in selection of a treatment method to address their ongoing copper issues per OHA guidelines.

Assistance Provided:

A technical memorandum was generated in the previous circuit rider support effort that addresses selection of a corrosion control method using the EPA OCCT manual. The technical memo called for an orthophosphate product. One available product that JCWA could use is Aquapure Ortho 36 NSF. Currently this product can be sourced through Brenntag Specialties out of Allentown, PA.

At 5000 gallons of water use per day, the system would require about 0.16 pounds of this product per day to maintain a 1.5 ppm orthophosphate residual. Initially to build the protective film, JCWD may want to want to run double that dose for the first 30 days, then decrease to 1.5 ppm. This will allow the product to establish a protective chemical film throughout the system.

We recommend a small flow-paced peristaltic pump such as a Stenner brand be used for dosing the orthophosphate. An appropriate LMI pump would be the PD01. For the Stenner brand, a 45MHP2 should suffice. The doser shall inject the orthophosphate mix downstream of all tanks/equipment and just prior to a static mixer before entering distribution. The dosing pump shall be wired to run off a switched outlet with the distribution pumps.

It is suggested to dial in the recommended flowrate first by measuring the amount of water removed from a graduated cylinder over time. Once this baseline flowrate has been established, minute adjustments shall be made to the metering pump until the desired residual of orthophosphate is seen in distribution. These adjustments also may take some time and effort to fine tune. A HACH #2248-00 test kit must be used to measure orthophosphate in the system. Read and follow all SDS recommendations for Aquapure Ortho 36 NSF.
