Assistance Type: | OTHER WATER QUALITY - Repair of system to address positive total coliform detections in distribution samples. | ||
Reasons: | Coliform |
||
Details: | Please see details below from the operator that explained the correction that was made to the water system to address the total coliform-positive results that were in the distribution system. The source was water filter change contamination. We have never had a positive coliform test behind our main facilities water inlet line. I did multiple in house coliform tests and found it was positive immediately after our water filter. Now we store and cleanse our water filters with chlorine. Upon a filter change or re-entry to our water system the line must be flushed and tested for chlorine. When the chlorine is cleared the system is reopened to potable water. There were 2 long dead-end legs in our water system. I removed them. We used to not conduct water system back flushing and now that is conducted during filter changes and our filtration bypass is a stagnation source that gets evacuated as well during filter changes. I made all of these changes within a week so I can’t say definitively what the exact primary source for each different positive result was. But I know the root cause was that before I joined St. Cousair we were not using chlorine to maintain a bio free water filter storage/cleansing. Since this correction was made to the system and appears to have addressed the issue, the disinfectant residual requirement has been suspended. The firm is required to take monthly distribution samples at this time. |
