Details: E. Coli positive sample

03.27.203-I emailed David requesting an update on the RT samples that were needed to address the E. Coli positive on March 14, 2023. David reported the following:

The water treatment plant is down. The plant normally runs at 120 PSI, but it's currently at 0-20 PSI. The intake pipe froze early in the year, and it is possible this may have caused a break in the line and the low pressure. Without pressure in the line, the system was unable to collect the required repeat samples. David also reported that they are experiencing high turbidity. This has affected their filtration system. David believes that High turbidity and the presence of organics in the backwash may indicate issues with the screen on the water intake. Currently the operator has no access to the road to the water intake due to high volume of snow (over four feet). David is in the process of contacting Redwoods National Park to request a bulldozer. This would allow them to clear the road for access to the intake limiting the time it takes to snowshoe. Currently, it's 9+ hours round trip, not including repairs.

Prior to the E. coli positive sample, the system had a defective fire sprinkler at the lodge drained all the water out of the storage tanks. The sprinkler was repaired and now the system is trying to fill up the tanks with minimal water coming from the intake line.

Next step: complete a Level 2 Coliform investigation by April 29, 2023.

03.15.23-David informed me that the system had an RT sample that tested positive for E. Coli. There are no customers or employees using the water at this time. The system is on quarterly monitoring.
Next steps: David was instructed to collect 3 repeat samples as soon as practical. No corrective action should be completed prior to collecting repeat samples. Repeats must be collected according to their coliform sampling plan. A revised coliform sampling plan template was provided via email.
