Details: | Background/Problem Identification: The circuit rider was contacted by Rita Trick from RCAC to assist the Wamic Water Association with adding chlorination to their emergency well. The Wamic Water Association is also looking for assistance in the process of bringing an inactive well back online. Assistance Provided: The circuit rider recommends first that WWA investigates why the well was allowed to be taken offline in the first place. There is a strong possibility that the well was taken offline in 2006 when the EPA lowered the MCL for arsenic from 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion. Many wells went inactive around 2006/2007 for this reason. If the well does not have an arsenic (or other regulated contaminant) issue, the next step would be to reach out to Tom Pattee of OHA to discuss a path forward to bringing the well back online. Tom can be reached at 541-684-2440 or tom.pattee@dhsoha.state.or.us. The WWA also wanted information on chlorination of this well once it is brought back online. The circuit rider can assist with this process by making material recommendations. The WWA will need to purchase equipment likely similar to the equipment used to chlorinate their existing well and build a well house to house the equipment. Please note that chlorination of the well will need to go through OHA’s “plan review” process detailed on the following site: https://www.oregon.gov/oha/PH/HEALTHYENVIRONMENTS/DRINKINGWATER/PLANREVIEW/Documents/PR-NewDisinfection.pdf#page=2 The WWA will likely need to hire an engineer to assist in preparing the plan review package. It is highly recommended that the WWA and their engineer carefully follow the instructions detailed on the linked website above. Follow-Up Actions Needed: The circuit rider is available to assist further as needed. Technical Reports to be Prepared and Expected Timeframe: N/A |
