Details: | Received an OERS report that the City of Mitchell placed themselves on a boil advisory. Called the city recorder Krista. She explained that roughly ten days ago the spring boxes got overtopped due to heavy rains and snowmelt and flows in the transmission line went from about 35 gpm to 200 gpm. The water coming through the line was turbid and colored, so the city issued a boil advisory at that time. After the high flows through the line subsided, a coliform sample was collected and it passed so the boil advisory was lifted. Today a substantial break in the transmission line was discovered in a segment that passes through an easement on private property which happens to be a cow pasture. This prompted another boil advisory to be issued. This 150-foot section of the transmission line is known to have had breakage problems over the years. City staff with assistance from the city engineer determined this section of the transmission line is in need of emergency replacement. A temporary repair is being made today. Advised Krista that we need to see restoration of the chlorine residual and passing coliform samples before DWS would allow the current boil advisory to be lifted. City to keep DWS appraised of developments. |
