Details: | Background/Problem Identification: Scott Marrs with the Shaniko Water System reached out to the circuit rider to assist with an assessment of their groundwater system. Assistance Provided: The circuit rider visited the Shaniko Water System on Friday, May 5th to discuss issues with the water system identified both in their latest feasibility study and the current water system survey from OHA. The circuit rider had reviewed the WSS prior to visiting the water system and is in concurrence with it’s findings. The reservoir roof is in fair condition, but many panels on the roof are not secure, leaving the roof susceptible to damage and surface debris intrusion during periods of high winds. It is recommended that the panels be secured, and the roof fully sealed to prevent this issue in the future. The subterranean chlorination/pumping building is in poor condition and is highly susceptible to the corrosive nature of the sodium hypochlorite which is stored in close proximity to ferrous metals and electronic equipment. The chlorination building is also constructed in a manner that requires confined space certification to enter. We recommend rebuilding the chlorination/pumping building with the sodium hypochlorite in a separate room with ventilation. Also, the structure should not be re-constructed as a confined space classified building. Follow-Up Actions Needed: The circuit rider is available as needed for follow-up assistance.
