Assistance Type: MONITORING
Reasons: Cyanotoxins

Details: Late Tuesday 7/25/23, OHA issued a recreational use advisory for Aarons Lake, Pete’s Slough & Sturgeon Lake located on Sauvie Island. Samples for cyanotoxins testing were collected on 7/21/23 from 4 locations and preliminary results show detections of microcystins, anatoxin-a, and saxitoxin at 2 locations (Boat Launch & Pete’s Slough) with the highest result being anatoxin-a at 369 ug/L. OHA, in consultation with DEQ, has evaluated the susceptibility of downstream public water systems on the Columbia River and determined they are susceptible to these cyanotoxins. As a result, OHA is requiring cyanotoxins monitoring be done according to OAR 333-061-0510 through 0580. Analysis will be performed by the DEQ lab in Hillsboro. Notified PWS this date and that DEQ lab will be contacting them soon to discuss sampling logistics. Since there is a recreational HABs advisory upstream, raw water monitoring frequency will begin at weekly (typically Mondays). Anatoxin-a and saxitoxin are not regulated under OHA rules, but since they were both detected in the Sturgeon Lake sampling event, OHA is requesting testing for these two cyanotoxins in raw water for a time to be determined. First sampling event scheduled for week of 7/31/23.
