Details: | Background/Problem Identification: The circuit rider was contacted by Robert Woodard from Lane County Public Works to assist the Mapleton Water District with an assessment of a recent landslide and the possible effect on their water transmission line. Assistance Provided: On 09/15/2023, Civil West (CW) met with the system operator Joseph Rochon and Water Board Chairperson Vanessa West. The length of the transmission main was walked and visually assessed. The slide area was just west of the WTP and was comprised of an 80x20 foot section of soil and trees that appeared to have recently shifted due to both the cant of the trees and the appearance of upturned soils seen at the perimeter of the disturbed section. Further up the intake access road, more evidence of slide activity was seen along with flowing water. There is a section of the road that is underlain by two ~36” galvanized steel culverts that direct the creek source from the south side of the road to the north side. It was noted that one of the culverts had water freely flowing into it and no water exiting on the downstream side. This culvert has likely failed, and creek water is potentially undermining the creek intake access road, and in turn the raw water transmission main that is thought to be buried in the roadbed. The circuit rider recommends that a geotechnical engineer assess the site and give recommendations on protecting/repairing the road and or transmission line. Follow-Up Actions Needed: The circuit rider is available to assist further as needed. Technical Reports to be Prepared and Expected Timeframe: N/A |
