Assistance Type: | CIRCUIT RIDER ASSISTANCE | ||
Details: | Background/Problem Identification: Woodland MHP had reached out to the circuit rider for further assistance regarding moving the ion exchange resin filtration upstream of the greensand filtration system. Assistance Provided: The circuit rider worked with both Dennis Keisling and Garren Friedemann regarding moving the ion exchange filtration upstream of the greensand filter. Dennis also provided the proprietary names for both the ion exchange (Purolite SSTC-60) and greensand (Purolox) filter media. Referencing Purolite’s product information sheets for both SSTC-60 and ion exchange resins in general, SSTC-60 can be used in elevated iron concentrations (Woodland has ~1.0 ppm Fe in their raw water) without risk of iron fouling, and in general ion exchange literature Purolite also recommends that chlorine will both diminish ion exchange resin life, AND that chlorine residual will be removed by ion exchange resin in the process. Woodland should partner with Delta to replumb the water system to put the green sand system after the ion exchange resin filter. This should: • Allow the operator to maintain a stable chlorine residual in distribution, without the hypochlorite “burning” through the ion exchange resin in its current configuration. • Enhance the performance of the greensand filter. • Improve ion exchange resin life. It should be noted that in onsite testing the baseline chlorine residual readings at Woodland are typically close to zero, only increasing over time with an unknown parameter that causes positive interference with the DPD reagent used for the free chlorine residual test. Follow-Up Actions Needed: The circuit rider can provide further follow-up assistance if needed. |
