Details: | The system received results from there five triggered source sample required after their recent annual source assessment returned total coliform and E. coli positives. Three of the samples returned E. coli positive and all five returned total coliform postitive. These results confirm that E. coli is present in the source. As an interim corrective action, the system shut off Well 3 immediately after notification of a presumptive positive on their 4th quarter routine. The system relied on Well #1 as their sole source for drinking water and sanitation water. The system maintains residual chlorination in their distribution system with daily measuring and logging of the chlorine concentration in distribution. The system found no lapse in residual chlorination in distribution in the recent past. However, it is not clear if a contact time evaluation has been performed for this chlorination system and can not be assumed to provide 4-log inactivation of viruses. Once the confirmation was received, the system initiated their plan to thoroughly investigate the source and shock chlorinate the well column and distribution past 2-well blending and residual chlorination, which constitutes the Entry Point. A hole was discovered in the well casing just above the concrete slab surrounding the well. Evidence of rodent activity was found in small box well house. The hole was sealed and the area cleaned prior to shock chlorination. The system is allowing the chlorination to sit in the well column and initial distribution prior to flushing. This hole constitutes a reasonably likely source of the contamination causing the positives and the closure of this hole eliminates the source of contamination. At this time, no formal source evaluation by OHA is not recommended. We discussed public notice forms and requirements. Since the system has shut down well #3 and is providing water from Well #1 it is likely a boil water notice will not be required. |
