Details: | Background/Problem Identification: Russ Kazmierczak of OHA/Drinking Water Services contacted the CR to request assistance for Adel School-SD21 Schoolhouse with evaluating the performance of their chlorinator. The CR contacted Tonya Stratton on 10/06/2023 to begin collecting information about issues they were experiencing with their water system, specifically the chlorinator. Assistance Provided: The CR reviewed the most recent water system survey report from August 2009 and found no deficiencies at that time related to chlorination. The CR then reviewed contact reports filed by Russ Kazmierczak that indicated coliform samples taken on 03/20/2023 had tested positive. This prompted the need for repeat coliform samples and began focusing attention on the chlorinator. Further investigation by the CR, which included viewing photos collected by Russ during a recent site visit, suggested the current chlorinator (installed in 2016) was likely out of service. The CR made a site visit on 10/12/2023 to look at the water system and discuss operations with Tonya Stratton and Travis Koefoed. The CR assisted Tonya with replacing the filter cartridges on both sediment filters and gathered information on the chlorination system. The CR was able to confirm that the chlorination system was not currently in operation. Following the site visit, the CR contacted Stenner Pumps, manufacturer of the chlorination system. Based on discussions with Stenner Pumps, the CR sent an email to Tonya and Travis on 10/13/2023 outlining steps to troubleshoot the chlorination system and determine its operability going forward. In the opinion of the CR, it is very possible the chlorination system will need to be overhauled or possibly replaced due to a significant period of inactivity. Follow-Up Actions Needed: The circuit rider is available to assist further as needed. Technical Reports to be Prepared and Expected Timeframe: N/A |
