Details: | Fred Schatz reached out regarding root intrusion in SRC-BA Davis/Odell Spring. I spoke with Tom Pattee, our geologist, and I discussed via e-mail about the root intrusion in the Davis/Odell Spring at the Crystal Springs Water District (00386) and Tom had this to say: “I’ve seen roots in the springbox but not up in the piping so I’m not sure how other water systems have dealt with that type of situation. If they are planning on reconstructing next year, there may not be any urgency in removing the roots as… the piping has already been breached and probably has been breached for a few years – removing the roots won’t change that. Removal might keep the roots from getting bigger but I’m not sure that makes a difference? The spring went through monthly source assessment monitoring in 2015 – 2016 and was shown to have a chronic coliform problem. As a result of the chronic coliform issue and the presence of a stream nearby, we had Odell W. C. collect MPAs for GWUDI. The MPAs scored low (groundwater). There was an e-coli detection in an annual assessment sample collected in Feb 2022 but confirmation sampling was negative for both e.coli and total coliform – which is the last time the spring appears to have been sampled. So, I’m not sure what the proper approach here is since I wouldn’t expect any significant changes hydrologically. However, for public health purposes it might be reasonable to require monthly assessment sampling until the spring is reconstructed.” I agreed that since the District was already working towards reconstructing the spring and the spring was equipped with chlorine for residual maintenance only, monthly source assessment monitoring should be done to more closely monitor the source water for possible E. coli contamination. This decision is also supported given some of the unknowns of the spring construction, high aquifer sensitivity, and surface water within 500-ft. This was communicated to Fred Schatz via e-mail on 8/17/23. |
