Assistance Type: | OTHER WATER QUALITY - Finished water microcystins detection over HAL | ||
Reasons: | Cyanotoxins |
||
Details: | The finished water sample for Wednesday 8/7/24 had a total microcystins detection of 0.54 ug/L which exceeds the 0.3 ug/L drinking water health advisory level (HAL) for vulnerable people. This requires a finished water confirmation sample be collected within 24 hours (sample scheduled to be collected 8/12). If the confirmation sample is also over the HAL, the water system will be required to issue and do-not-drink advisory for vulnerable people within 24 hours of receiving results. Although not required by rule, OHA suggested the water system consider notifying the public about the initial 8/7/24 finished water sample that is over the HAL. On 8/7/24, OHA instructed Gates to stay on daily finished water monitoring on days the treatment plant is running due to a disinfection treatment interruption on 8/7/24 (chlorinator injection line sprung a leak) and the chlorine residual dropping below 1 ppm. The injection line was repaired same-day and residual rose to 1.8 ppm at time of sampling, however Gates has been targeting a higher 3.1 ppm residual during this cyanotoxins event. Daily finished water samples collected after 8/7 should be shipped Monday 8/12 (along with the 8/12 raw and finished samples) and arrive at the DEQ lab Tuesday 8/13. Update 8/16/24: finished water results from samples collected Thursday 8/8, Saturday 8/10, and Monday 8/12 were all non-detect. Since the finished water results were not confirmed to exceed the HAL, no action is required. Gates will return to weekly raw & finished water monitoring on Mondays starting 8/19/24. Update 8/19/24: due to finished water microcystins detection less than the HAL for sample collected 8/14/24, Gates will return to daily finished water monitoring on days the treatment plant is running. Update 8/28/24: Gates qualifies to return to weekly finished water monitoring. |
