Details: Hi Amanda,
This week I’m anxious to see results for three TEMPORARY ROUTINE samples. FYI. If any of the three samples show presence of coliform bacteria you will be directed to take more (3) REPEAT SAMPLES and (1) SOURCE sample. If results are clean your next samples will be due in the April-May-June quarter.
Too many samples showing coliform present may prompt you to consider ongoing disinfection or the state to require it. When you want to add treatment to a public water system, you approach the state and ask about “plan review” by calling 971-673-0405.
I’m roughly outlining three treatment scenarios relating to disinfection (there are variations):
#1. ULTRAVIOLET (UV) LIGHT:
The state may waive plan review and the plan review fee. There are UV lights that disinfect for virus and protozoa and fecal material (never waived). There are UV lights that disinfect water for bacteria (usually waived). When the only concern is bacteria from a ground water well these work. Labor and maintenance relates to periodically cleaning the UV sleeve and annually replacing the UV bulb.
#2. CHLORINATION:
Chlorination is required for a ground water well when there is a series of samples showing coliform bacteria present. Chlorine is good destroying bacteria in a ground water well and the chlorine adds a little insurance for a crack in a water line that lets a little dirt in. The chlorine can help oxidize contaminants from a crack. There is some extra work that goes with using chlorine disinfection including measuring the chlorine daily just after where it enters the system plus on a weekly basis measuring the chlorine in 2 other locations in the distribution system. Frequently I see a water tank 500-1000 gallons where the chlorine does its job. Some people say chlorine is labor intensive because there is some work involved every day.
#3. OZONATION.
Provides some disinfection and can also help by removing iron. A tank is necessary for the ozone diffuser. The diffuse
