Hi Nicole,

We are trying to get a Decontamination Station installed in our Active Area for personal hygiene. It will be a modular building with a sink for washing one’s hands and face. If we were to tie that sink in with a series of outdoor showers and eyewash stations, could we run into trouble with cross contamination? I’m trying to convince my Manager that we need to think of the ‘no-see-ums’. I think an equivalent might be a drinking fountain at say, a park or schoolground. Is there anything we should be cognizant of while undertaking this construction?

With appreciation,

Peter J. Ceton

Hi Peter,
I'm just writing back to you in regards to your question that you had about de-contamination stations and cross-contamination. It sounds like you want to have a modular building with hand washing and face washing stations to promote personal hygiene. These stations would be tied in with outdoor showers and eye washing stations outside of the buildings.

Would these outdoor showers and eye washing stations be used regularly or for emergency contamination instances?

Will there be proper drainage for both the hand and face stations as well as the decontamination showers and eye wash stations?
Will there be back flow prevention and air gaps established into these pipes?
There are specific guidelines with Oregon Osha for the outdoor showers and eye wash stations, here is a link that gives basic information regarding those guidelines.
https://osha.oregon.gov/OSHAPubs/factsheets/fs02.pdf

If you would like more information on those guidelines we could get you more information on that.
