Details: | Spoke to Jason Wilson about the (somewhat belated) alert I just received for the xylene detection in the Sept 3 sample. Xylene(s) are components of petroleum hydrocarbon fuels (i.e., gasoline and diesel). Jason was wondering if it could have come from the water source - the Coos Bay Water Board water (though no detections in their latest VOC samples in May 2019), or perhaps contamination from fuel exposure when the sample was collected. The detection was very small (0.0015000 mg/L) compared to the maximum contaminant level of 10.0 mg/L. This detection does not cause any immediate change, because CCE is still on “initial monitoring rounds” with the new source and therefore testing for VOCs quarterly anyway. If after 4 consecutive quarters of monitoring, the xylene results are reliably and consistently below the MCL, the xylene schedule may be reduced to annual, along with the rest of the VOCs. The OAR citation is OAR 333-061-0036(3)(b)(D). |
