Details: | I had had a hard time reaching Steve since receiving the xylene alert. Today I sent a detailed email, then tried his phone again, and finally reached him. I wanted to make sure he understood that due to the recent detection, the monitoring interval for xylenes has been increased to quarterly, to be reviewed for possible reduction after one year of quarterly results have been reported. The first quarterly sample should be collected between Nov 1 and Dec 31 of this year. The increased monitoring is to determine whether this detection was an aberration from the norm, or ongoing, and to make sure the levels are not increasing. Xylene(s) are volatile organic compounds found in petroleum hydrocarbon fuels (i.e., gasoline and diesel) and could be present in drinking water due to contamination from fuel storage tanks or machinery. Steve has spoken with Jacquie Fern of DEQ in years past, and I strongly suggested he contact her again. Jacquie has brokered discussions with upstream neighbors for other drinking water systems on surface water sources. Both Steve and Jacquie suspect that preparations for logging in their watershed in a couple years might be behind this test result (for example, use of machinery for road preparation). |
