Details: pH in the summer was getting into the high 8.x range. To lower pH, on the chance it might increase iron-based pipe corrosion long-term, coagulant was switched from ACH to alum. pH dropped into the high 7.x range and when it continued to drop as summer concluded, a switch back to ACH was made. It is possible this change in coagulant resulted in a change in TOC removal efficiency. WDWD should analyze for raw water TOC once per month. Once qualified for reduce DBP monitoring, raw TOC monitoring can reduce to once per quarter.

pH of high 8.x should not present a corrosion problem, except around the range of 8.3 to 8.4 where copper solubility increases. Thus, continued use of ACH causing pH in the 8.5 to 9.0 range should not present a significant corrosion problem. Should WDWD seek to lower pH, it may add acid (e.g. citric acid) to lower pH to targets. It is recommended to monitor finished water TOC for effects that natural pH changes or use of citric acid may have on DBP formation.
