Details: | SUMMARY: VOC detect in coal-tar lined reservoir DETAILS: Bob contacted me via email that they had done a VOC test on the coal-tar lined Reservoir #1, based on my recommendation after a sanitary survey (they didnt think it had ever been done). Results showed a very small detect of total xylenes (0.00077 ppm vs an MCL of 10, which is << 4 orders of magnitude). Also a detect of PCE was detected at an expected level given levels in their sources. Since coal tar can be more volatile in warmer temperature, I told bob to take another VOC sample this summer. If detections are significant, they will have to do a total of 4 quarters and we will decide from there what to do. Removing coal tar lining is recommended of course. Dave Stone suggested that PAHs can also leach out of coal tar (benzo(a) pyrene, an SOC), but we havent required that testing in the past. ACTION NEEDED: await summertime results |
