Details: | SUMMARY: Complaint investigation and operator update. DETAILS: I received a complaint over the phone on 5/8/2006 from a resident of the mobile home park. The resident complained that the operator, Opal Emerson, had too many health problems to be in charge of the system and that the water smelled of sulfur. She also said that after sitting for a period of time in a clean glass jar with lid on, white strands of a mucus-like substance would form in the water. The water system is behind in sampling for coliform bacteria. The white substance may be caused by the build up of sulfur bacteria. I contacted the system owner, Gerry Burnett today. He will collect a coliform sample as soon as possible. I recommended he shock chlorinate the well to remove the possible sulfur and/or iron bacteria build-up. He also informed me that he is now the operator in charge for the system and he has been maintaining the filters. I mailed Gerry information on how to shock chlorinate the well, a fact sheet on sampling procedures and a fact sheet on sulfur bacteria. ACTION NEEDED: Update sdwis with new contact information. Await results of coliform sample. Notify complainant of action taken. |
