Details: | SUMMARY: Nitrate alert DETAILS: The Hood River County Health Department received an alert by fax on Fri. 12/01/06 for the Odell Water Company in response to a nitrate sample result which exceeded the action level of 0.5 MCL (i.e. 5.49 mg/l). Sample ID A60706T-1, sample date 7/6/06, had a nitrate concentration of 8.00 mg/l. Phil Davis, Odell Water System was contacted as well as Joe Carlson, DHS DWP compliance and Debra Lambeth, DHS DWP regional engineer to discuss the nitrate trend and establish consensus regarding an appropriate chemical monitoring schedule. Odell Water Company is recognized by the DHS DWP online database for maintaining nitrate samples reliably and consistently (R and C) below the MCL. Subsequently, the sampling schedule expectation is to comply with yearly nitrate sampling, quarterly nitrate sampling is no longer expected or required for the Odell Water Company. ACTION NEEDED: Odell Water Company collected a 4th quarter nitrate sample, the result (unconfirmed) as conveyed by Phil Davis is 9 mg/l. While the Odell Water Company is R and C below the MCL, the average nitrate value between May 2001 and July 2006 is 7.07 mg/l (n equals 36). Odell Water Company is encouraged to continue to maintain nitrate concentrations R and C below the MCL. If nitrate values exceed the MCL (i.e. 10.49 mg/l), an adjustment to the chemical schedule will be assessed. |
