Details: | SUMMARY: Request from CWS for assistance with controls and automation problems. DETAILS: The City of Myrtle Creek owns and operates a community water system composed of a distribution system, river pump station, two mixed media filtration plants, and various storage tanks. This action regards the Springbrook filter plant. Recently, the CWS contacted the circuit rider to request help in diagnosing backwash cycle problems which cause turbidity spikes under certain circumstances during backwash. The operator believed that the problem was within the control system. In addition, the CWS asked for recommendations regarding existing control system problems and possible upgrade paths that would prevent turbidity spikes, improve water quality, and make the system easier to monitor and adjust. I visited the plant and spoke to the operator about the process control problems. We talked about hot button issues and tried to prioritize solutions. I identified 2 problems in the control program that were causing the backwash turbidity spikes and corrected them. I provided a report to the CWS that identified 4 upgrade options that could be made to the system that would improve process control and monitoring. The report included budgetary estimates. ACTION NEEDED: Answer questions generated by the report. |
