Details: | SUMMARY: Coliform alert DETAILS: Hood River County Health Dept. received alert on 4/9/07 for USFS Wyeth CG in response to a + result for 3 of 4 repeat coliform samples collected 4/3/07. Repeat samples were collected in response to a TCR+ on 4/2/07. On 4/10/07 HRCHD confirmed that DRC received a message from state DHS DWP re: TCR+ results for repeat samples. HRCHD also confirmed (per DRC) that routine sample (4/2/07) and repeat samples (4/3/07) were fecal coliform and E. coli absent. HRCHD confirmed repeat samples collected IAW the USFS Wyeth CGs coliform sampling plan. One repeat sample was collected at same tap as initial failing routine sample, one upstream, one downstream, one elsewhere in park-- all collected within 24 hours of notification of initial TCR+ result. On 4/9/07 DRC chlorinated system, flushed distribution lines. After confirming residual chlorine concentration of 0.5 mg/L, DRC allowed 24 hr. contact time.DRC was reminded to continue repeat sample sets until all results in set are TC absent. The DRC was also reminded to flush system adequately before collecting an additional set of 4 repeat samples so that sample is representative.Possible root cause discussed. DRC indicated that a broken valve was replaced on 3/21/07, but that chlorination of system not performed following this. This provides an explanation for potential introduction of coliform bacteria.DRC has shut down potable water distribution portion of system until acceptable repeat sample results. DRC posted public notification IAW OAR 333-061-0042 (2)(b)(A)-- placed flyer on car of camper staying at park. ACTION NEEDED: Hood River County Health Dept. will continue to work w/ USFS Wyeth CG to assure repeat samples collected until results are neg. for coliform. Reminders will be provided so that 5 routine samples are collected in May 07 and all results are submitted to Dept. for entry into SDWIS database. |
