Details: | SUMMARY: Turbidity Profile DETAILS: I met with Lloyd Allen at the treatment plan to perform a Filter Turbidity Profile. The plant was operating at a flow of 20 gpm. The filter had been in operation for approximately 30 hrs. A siphon was set up just under the surface of the water intended to carry turbid water to waste during backwash. The first sample was a dip sample from the top of the filter representing settled water NTUs. A sample NTU of 1.0 or less is a measure of the plants ability to settle turbid raw water prior to filtration. The settled NTU value of the dip sample was 1.15 NTUs. Raw water is not normally sampled by the operator. I indicated the importance of both the raw and settled NTU readings for optimal plant operations. The plant filter material has recently been replaced. After backwash, the top of the media was inspected for mud ball formation. Large particulates were noted in the corners of the filter, as well of a great of material was settled on the top of the filter directly under the launderer (trough). I requested that normal backwash from this point forward should include a dislodging of the surface of the filter with a rake where the particulates accumulate. Over time this material will be wish out of the filter. The backwash is a manual operation where all parameters are controlled by the operator. Additional recommendations were to increase the flow in gpm during the backwash and continue to control the filter to waste portion of the backwash. Currently the operator allows the filter to produce filter water when the filter to waste turbidity reaches 1.0 NTU. I suggested not returning the filter to service until the NTUs were at a value of 0.30 NTU. ACTION NEEDED: Schedule the CT tracer study with operator. |
