Details: | SUMMARY: Received request from System for assistance with equipment selection DETAILS: System pumps from a single well and provides services to 22 connections. Disinfection is currently provided by dripping chlorine directly into the well head and contact time is provided by the well casing volume, 36 gallon and 70 gallon pressure tanks, and available distribution piping. This system does not provide adequate contact time. Additionally, the operator finds it difficult to test chlorine concentrations on a daily basis. The owner and operator would like to use UV disinfection instead of chlorination, primarily to avoid the daily testing requirements. If UV disinfection by itself is determined to be inadequate, then a new chlorine feed system will be required along with storage tanks providing adequate contact time.Discussed the situation with Karen Kelley, Interim Unit Manager for Region 2, Karen indicated that IV is approved for disinfection meeting 4-log inactivation of viruses. However, depending on the size and condition of the distribution system, chlorination may be required for residual maintenance. I also contacted Tom Charbonneau, Plan Review Coordinator, by e-mail on 3/27/08 regarding the system and the requirement for tracer residuals. My recommendations will depend on Tom’s response. I have also discussed UV disinfection and the possible needs to maintain trace chlorine with Doug. ACTION NEEDED: HBH will either recommend a properly sized UV system or chlorination system and storage tank. |
