Details: | SUMMARY: Follow up visit to zero chlorine residual alert DETAILS: Due to the recent alert for zero chlorine residual (sample taken May 28), Casey Lyons and I met with Jeff Thiessen to review his water systems and recent changes. Jeff has been tweaking the water systems at his three school systems since he took over as the operator last year. Prior to the zero residual reading, he had installed new chemical pumps and changed the way he was dosing the chlorine. The quarterly sample was taken while he was still adjusting the chlorine dosage up and down to get it right. Today, we took chlorine and pH readings at the control building by the well (CL 1.4, pH 8.0), in the staff break room (CL 1.4), and at the Admin kitchen sink (CL 1.4, pH 8.0). He needs to maintain a minimum of 0.36 CL and 7.8 pH for this PWS, so now it is running quite high for the chlorine. Jeff is thinking of switching back to injecting a dilution of the chlorine solution (as his predecessor had done), rather than his recent attempt at directly injecting the 12.5% chlorine product. A diluted chlorine solution (e.g., 50-50) may allow him to bring the chlorine level down a bit closer to his goal. Chlorine was sniffable in the staff kitchen water. ACTION NEEDED: Continue daily chlorine monitoring, especially as the students leave for summer and stop using the water, and as Jeff switches back to injecting a diluted chlorine solution. |
