Details: | SUMMARY: Reviewed status of water treatment equipment because nitrate result is 6.57 mg/l DETAILS: I talked to both Les Bertalotto with the City and Mike Holladay consulting engineer. The ion-exchange treatment unit reduces both arsenic and nitrate but there had been some problems in February-March 2008 which caused the treatment unit to be shut off for several weeks. The water has elevated levels of TOC which binds with the resin and drastically shortens the time between resin regeneration. Design parameter was 600,000 gallons treated before regeneration required, but the binding problem reduced the amount to 300,000 gallons and therefore the wastewater system could not handle the increase in waste. The treatment system is now working but does not reduce arsenic or nitrate as much as expected. Mike Holladay feels the arsenic level is below 10 mg/l and the City took an arsenic sample June 28. ACTION NEEDED: Les Bertalotto and Mike Holladay are meeting with EPA, design engineers, and treatment equipment suppliers in Columbus Ohio on July 14 to review methods of improving treatment efficiency. Mike Holladay will notify DWP of conclusions. An arsenic sample was taken June 28 and that result will be reported as soon as available. |
