Details: | SUMMARY: Emergency - loss of supply from primary well due to broken pipe DETAILS: Mike called about 10:45 am Friday 12 September to report that the City had lost water supply from the primary well source due to a broken pipe in the well control building. The water level in the 50,000 gallon elevated tank was down to about 7 feet, and I advised Mike to get the back-up well going. The emergency back-up supply, Well 3 has not been used for several years and Mike was unsure about the well equipment and water quality. He contacted Forest Green (former operator) and started Well 3 about 11:30 am. Meanwhile, the City issued a boil water warning because water quality from Well 3 is unknown, Well 3 has no chlorine treatment, customers were noticing discolored water, and there was potential for severe pressure loss if the supply in the elevated tank was exexhausted. I I was on-site in the afternoon to inspect Well 3 and collect coliform samples. The 50,000 gallon elevated tank was nearly full because of the use of the back-up well. Coliform samples were collected at Well 3 and 2 other locations in the distribution system. There was a trace of chlorine (0.2 mg/l) in the distribution system. The primary well was restored to service at about 4 pm Friday. ACTION NEEDED: Boil warning to be lifted Saturday 13 September if adequate chlorine residual is measured throughout system, and coliform samples are negative. |
