Details: | SUMMARY: Taste and Order Problems DETAILS: This system has a history of intermittent taste and odor problems. Operator comments suggest that warm conditions might create algae related issues in the summer and in the autumn season a “dirt like” taste is sometimes experienced. It has been also noted that distribution system maintenance has sometimes revealed some blacken pipes that may suggest high manganese levels. I reviewed taste and odor treatment and made a field visit to review the system’s facilities with the operator and discuss options. Decided there is a need to start regular testing for iron and manganese to attempt to qualify these levels and when they occur. I contacted the lab equipment vendor and provided the operator with iron and manganese test reagent information and procedures. The level of iron and manganese will help determine if permanganate and/or a powdered activated carbon feed system would be most appropriate to reduce taste and odor problems. I determined the best injection point for a carbon solution would be just prior to the raw water tank. It this were done, the piping would need modifications to allow a “clean” raw water sample tap. The system would best located in the covered area outside the rear access door. It is likely the equipment would require this structure be larger and weatherproofed. I determined the best injection point for a permanganate system would be after the raw water tank. The mixing equipment would be located inside the treatment plant. It was noted that there was a need to reorganize all chemical feed equipment and remove unused equipment and supplies from the facility. ACTION NEEDED: Operations staff will make contact with HBH as iron and manganese data is attained. |
