Details: | SUMMARY: Received call from Parent about closed school PWS DETAILS: Received a call from a parent of a student at Fern Ridge Middle School, who is investigating several possible environmental exposures of her child in the past few weeks. She asked about the schools water - I told her what I knew about the high pH at the school reported on October 21, 2008, and their use of bottled water while the system was flushed. But she explained that the entire system had been shut down, with portable toilets brought in. I phoned Jeff Theissen, who explained that at the same time as the pH spike, a booster pump had failed, leaving them without water pressure. He shut off the storage tank side of the water system while the pump was replaced. I researched proper protocol for total loss of pressure in a chorinated system, and left Jeff a message detailing the following: A boil water advisory, and notify the state drinnking water program. Once positive pressure has been restored, flush the system, verify the chlorine residual level, take coliform samples, and do not lift the boil water notice until the sample results show absence of coliform bacteria. Then notify users that the water is safe to use after they flush the lines. ACTION NEEDED: Confirm with Jeff what steps he took after restoring pressure to the system. |
