Details: | SUMMARY: Fluoride overfeed DETAILS: Steve called to let us know that they experienced a fluoride overfeed this morning. Their SCADA system normally sets the feed rate of the feed pump, and for some reason it put in 100 ppm fluoride. The day tank was drained. Normally they go through about 165 lbs of fluoride in a day, and this was 600 lbs in a short time period. They stopped feeding fluoride as soon as they discovered it, and have been measuring the effluent of the clearwell as well as the high service tank every hour or two. The highest concentration of the clearwell effluent was 2.4 ppm. The highest at the high service tank (pumped from clearwell) was 1.04 ppm. The rest of the water goes by gravity into town. They will continue sampling every couple hours. Now the system is full so the plant is off, so they cannot dilute it further. I said if it got worse they could drain some of the clearwell and restart the plant, but he would prefer not to do that. I told him that there is no violation associated with this, but that he should consider alerting sensitive populations such as dialysis centers. I also thought there were some Consumer Confidence Reporting issues that he said he would look into later. For now, they will not resume fluoride addition until the clearwell effluent is below 1.0 ppm. ACTION NEEDED: none |
