Details: | JCWA has both copper and DBP issues. The copper issue at the time was thought to be due to incorrect testing procedure by the homeowner, however later testing with a supervised test procedure also came back from the lab with a copper level in exceedance of the MCL. The circuit rider suggested that a simple “bucket test” should be run to determine if the amount of co2 in the well water was excessive. The circuit rider recommended that the Water Association look into air stripping as a means to raise the pH of the raw well water. The findings of the bucket test did in fact show a marked increase in pH (0.8, from 8.1 to 8.9) after a short time (15 minutes) of aeration. In later discussion with OHA , the bucket test data was considered unusual, not based wholly on the high starting point, but rather the fact that this is a groundwater source (typically groundwater sources have very stable pH) and prior laboratory testing in distribution yielded consistent pH readings of 7.6. Due to the discrepancy between the recent pH readings from the lab and the more recent “bucket test” pH results, we are recommending that the JCWA purchase a pH meter and establish a consistent testing schedule daily or weekly. With the pH data provided by JCWA, we will be able to better recommend a corrosion treatment method. We are also recommending that another round of copper testing be done, as there has only been one exceedance on record. |
