Details: | SUMMARY: Conducted WTP Inspection DETAILS: Reviewed and conducted testing protocols at site. Operator conducted the tests. Found chlorine residual about 2 mg/L, turbidity 1.6 NTU in finished water. Discussed slow sand filter maintenance. Klaas said the manufacturer is non-responsive. Raw NTU was 3.5 and filtered NTU was 2.9 indicating filter not operating properly. Schmutzdecke biolayer on sand surface possibly not sufficiently developed. Discussed calculation of CT. Provided tables for various values of pH, because operator only had tables for pH of 7. Evaluated unusual consistency of raw water temperature and pH. Found that temperature is measured at the bottom of an 18,000 gallon cement cistern, which at the low system flows likely result in relatively stable readings. Unsure why pH would be so stable, other than that the water likely resides in the cistern for a day or longer. UV unit has no means to measure UVT or intensity. Cartridge filter has no pressure gauges. Water flow path through piping difficult to discern due to existing configuration. ACTION NEEDED: Engineering assistance would help resolve reason for filter inefficiency, piping routes, and placement of pressure gauges. Refer operator to OAWU. Conduct tracer study. |
