Coliform

Details: SUMMARY: Ecoli alert DETAILS: This was a revisit as continued follow up to the Ecoli alert. 5 samples were taken 4/11/11 and the results were available on 4/13/11. All 5 including the triggered sample, came back negative for the presence of coliform. In todays visit we reviewed the ongoing issues with the chlorinator and the relevance of keeping the chlorinator online and not letting it run empty. A new chlorine residual sheet was given to the system and the system has been instructed to record the chlorine residual every day for one month beginning as soon as they purchase an approved dpd chlorine testing kit (the system was also instructed to get an approved dpd testing kit within the week.) After that, and if all checks out, the system can record the residual 2x/week only. I also spent some additional time again reviewing their ERP and what steps would have been necessary in the event of an actual violation. Fortunately this did not occur. I retested the chlorine residual and today was 1.6ppm. I reviewed with the system the relevance of the number and the minimum amount of chlorine residual required for any system,.2ppm. Today they returned to normal operating procedures and has gone off the bottled and boiled water. ACTION NEEDED: They need to take 5 more routine samples the following month in May 2011 as a follow up to the current 5 samples. The system agreed. I also informed the operator to take the next available small systems operator class for additional training. I will continue to work with the system to optimize their chlorinator and figure out the best chlorine to water ratio to maintain a residual somewhere around .2-.6ppm. From here on system needs to purchase a dpd test kit, begin recording their chlorine residual on a daily basis and provide active maintenance of the chlorinator and resample the water in May 2011
