Details: | SUMMARY: Temporary routine sample was positive for total coliform DETAILS: Because of a positive routine sample in August, they needed to take temporary routine samples from the distribution system in September. One of these (dated 9/29/11) came back positive for total coliform. They immediately took the 4 required repeats and one triggered sample, and all were positive for total coliform. They posted a Tier 2 Public Notice, and we discussed the options. Since this campground was about to close for the season anyway, Joel decided it would make more sense to shut off the water now, and wait until spring to shock chlorinate and clean out the system. He drained the redwood storage tank, shut off the water, and continued operation as a "primitive" campground until the posted closing day (from Oct 4th to 10th). Joel says they have had some trouble with the chlorinator at that system, so he will be checking that before the season re-opens. Since residual levels were not noted on the lab samples, it is hard to determine whether it was the chlorinator. He will inform Tim, the on-site ranger at Goose Lake, to be sure and record the chlorine levels on the lab form with future samples. Joel and I also discussed some tips about redwood tanks (e.g., they tend to have less bacterial growth if you keep them full all the time.) He will also make sure Tim has a current Coliform Sampling Plan. ACTION NEEDED: Ask Joel to provide a copy of the Public Notice. | ||
